The internet has come a long way since the days of dial-up, when you waited hours wait for a web page to load, or to download a tiny graphic image to your computer. Back then pixels were king and optimization of absolutely everything you uploaded to the web was essential to keep file sizes as low as possible.

Fast forward to the present and not only can you upload and download at pretty much warp speed, you can watch movies, talk to friends on apps like Skype and Snapchat and you feel that everything that could happen on the internet has happened.

But that’s what’s great about the web, it always something else up it’s sleeve to amaze you with.

And 3D gifs are definitely in it’s party bag of magic tricks. But how?

Is it witchcraft, or is it some newfangled digital manipulation–or are they both one and the same thing? By adding two enchanted lines made of unicorn dust, it creates internet magic on your screen and these images appear as if they’re 3D!

Well, not quite. But it is a very simple technique: just by adding two vertical white lines to a 2D image, your brain is tricked into thinking it’s a 3D scene.

The effect can be further enhanced by blurring the ‘field of depth’, which creates an extra sense of depth……Ok, we lied, it’s magic.

Check out these 25 examples below.
