Rick and Morty is, undoubtably, a great show, has a huge loyal fanbase (and also lots of haters), but what’s not so great about it is some of the toxicity and behavior of some of the fanbase in social media. In this video from YouTuber ‘I Hate Everything’ he details what it is about some of the fandom that irritates him so much.

And part of his annoyance stems from the fact that, as the show’s popularity has increased with the release of Rick and Morty season 3 the fanbase has got increasingly louder. Like that drunk guy at the bar shouting stuff and harassing people with jokes he thinks is funny and clever—but they totally aren’t.

Because it’s not the subtly of the show this element of the fanbase is shouting about, it’s the really obvious jokes. Like the way even before the episode aired Pickle Rick became a huge meme. Just his mere presence in the season 3 trailer was enough to spawn a massive online sea of pictures and GIFs.

But it’s not just the Rick and Morty fanbase being overly enthusiastic over jokes either. As has been seen by some of them online, it’s the way that some of them are pretty misogynistic too. And, let’s be clear, this isn’t everyone in the fanbase by any means. But a small splintering of them on Reddit have said that the decline in quality of the third season of Rick and Morty (which is a subjective view of course because many people believe it’s been a great season), is due to the fact that new female writers have been hired.

They said the show was “forced” to hire “female SJW writers”—with the SJW standing for “social justice warriors.” But it ignores the fact that the show has always used female writers.

Why The Rick And Morty Fanbase Are Total Dicks

The latter was addressed on a Reddit thread by a former employee of the show, who now moderates the Rick and Morty subreddit under the username elastical_gomez. They hit back at the Rick and Morty fanbase misogynists by saying, “Plenty of women have been involved with the creation and production since the beginning of the show. Women work on R&M as producers, coordinators, assistants, voice actors, production managers, storyboard artists, designers, colorists, editors & animators not to mention all the people who work at the network, marketing, etc. The whole process is highly collaborative and everyone contributes to the end product. Whatever issues you have with the show past 2 episodes, it has nothing to do with the writers’ genders.”

One of the shows co-creators Dan Harmon hit out at these trolls too, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly saying, “These knobs, that want to protect the content they think they own — and somehow combine that with their need to be proud of something they have, which is often only their race or gender. It’s offensive to me as someone who was born male and white, and still works way harder than them, that there’s some white male [fan out there] trying to further some creepy agenda by ‘protecting’ my work. I’ve made no bones about the fact that I loathe these people. It f—ing sucks. And the only thing I can say is if you’re lucky enough to make a show that is really good that people like, that means some bad people are going to like it too.”

So, yeah, some of the Ricky and Morty fanbase are dicks, but they’re no doubt in the minority. Unfortunately, they’re probably the most vocal on social media—and a much more clickable thing to write about than just normal everyday fans. Which makes their views much more prominent than they really should be.

No doubt haters are always gonna hate, but to keep the hate needle in the red for the Rick and Morty fanbase here are some more people (in the videos below) that are happy to fuel the fanbase fire with their opinions.
