Reza Farazmand’s Poorly Drawn Lines started off as a college newspaper strip, but now Farazmand works on it full time, producing multiple-panel webcomics that straddle the line between coffee-through the nose funny, and strangely poignant.

They’re full of off-the-wall, dry humor involving recurring characters, talking animals, demotivated bears, beetles going to college, and other surreal yet acute takes on modern life.

They’re in a similar vein to Gary Larson’s The Far Side and Matt Groening’s weekly comic strip Life in Hell. Farazmand cites the latter as a direct inspiration.

I got into cartooning toward the end of high school when I discovered Matt Groening’s Life in Hell. I’d mainly just read the Sunday comics up until then, and Groening’s stuff was this other side to the medium that I hadn’t seen before. It was edgy satire, and it felt like such a cool way to express ideas. A few months later in college I started PDL.

You can check out some of Farazmand’s comics below. Head to his website for more, and he’s even published them in book form should you want a physical copy sitting on your book shelf.
