Most people like to eat. Me, you, that fat guy over there wolfing down a double burger. But most of us try and lose weight, because the stuff we like to eat isn’t always the healthiest and we know that being overweight will kill us. But there exists an entire subculture of people who are the opposite of all those people on fad diets.

These people are called “gainers” and their goal in life is to gain weight. Lots of it.

Vocativ have a short doc called Diary of a Gainer: One Man’s Fight to Get Fat one such character, a guy who goes by the name of “Jake.” To give you an idea of how serious Jake takes his weight gaining (he’s gluten intolerant too, so it’s extra hard), he once drank a liter of vegetable oil just to pile on the pounds.

Jake notes that some people eat 30,000 calories a day. 30,0000! Jake can only manage 6 (thousand).

But the big question is: WHY? Why would gainers do this to their body knowing how bad it is for their health? It’s complicated. For some people it’s sexual others, like Jake, just feel compelled to do it.

“I always kind of knew I wanted to be bigger,” Jake explains.

He’s already gone from 150 to 205 pounds, but wants to be even larger.

He says, “You finally get to a point where you’re like, ‘Yeah I’m good.’ I wanna hit that point. And I don’t know what point that’ll be, but I know that I’m not there yet.”
