McDonald’s recently announced the news that it is bringing back the Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce. However, there’s a catch, it’s for a limited time only. As fans of the hit Adult Swim show will know, in Rick and Morty season 3 drunkard scientist genius Rick Sanchez delivers an epic rant about the gooey dip (and how much he misses it) which was brought out to promote Disney’s Mulan movie back in 1998.

In the show Rick tricked an intergalactic alien organization into creating a false reality, just so he could re-taste the sauce because he found it so delicious. At the end of the episode, he says that getting his hands on some more is what his series arc is going to be, whether it took 9 seasons or 97 years, he was going to get some.

After appearing in the show the Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce joke took off amongst fans accross social media channels who got a nostalgic craving for it. In fact, after its appearance in season 3 episode 1, ‘The Rickshank Rickdemption,’ more than 40,000 people actually signed a Change.org petition demanding its return.

Rick And Morty Szechuan Sauce Is Now A Thing

And, well, McDonald’s did end up bringing back the sauce, but only for the show’s creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. Now, finally, the rest of us are getting a chance to indulge in some of that sweet, sweet Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce. Because McDonald’s are bringing it back—for one day only. Yep, for just ONE day.

On 7 October 2017 a select few McDonald’s restaurants will be getting some of the limited stock of the Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce. “On Oct 7, together with the collectible sauce-themed posters, we’re also giving away a one-time only, limited-edition, run of Szechuan Sauce in select restaurants. And when we say limited, we mean really, really limited!” say the company.

If you want to know if it’ll be sold somewhere near you, you can check out which fast food joints will be selling it on McDonald’s website. The whole thing is tied in with promoting McDonald’s new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, and it’s obviously a pretty cynical exercise in tapping into the whole Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce meme to sell junk food, but it’s no doubt going to work.

Dan Harmon On Rick And Morty Szechuan Sauce

As for how good the Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce is compared to how good people remember it being, Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon told Entertainment Weekly this about it (albeit jokingly).

“I didn’t want to peg Justin down about whether it was as good, partly because I think he got together with other friends and tasted it without me first. And if McDonald’s is going to be so generous I don’t want to lure them in and then take a crap on their product. But I personally thought it was a sauce that was trying too hard in a world where with McNuggets sauce you just want something to taste like honey or like a BBQ sauce. It was sauce that was trying to prove it was different and in doing so it worked harder than a sauce should; it was working too hard to be a sauce.”
