If you’re learning how to do a backflip and it’s taking you some time to master it, maybe don’t watch this video by the seriously motivated Justin Kroehler of the Bucket List Boys. In under six hours he manages to figure it out.

It starts with him speaking to camera and explaining that, since he was a kid he’d always wanted to learn how to do this airborne backward somersault. But he was told he was too tall, so he sets out to prove those naysayers wrong by self-teaching how to do a backflip on the ground. And attempt a standing backflip no less.

To do that he simply heads out into his yard and gives it a go. Thinking about how to do a backflip and putting it into practice are two different things. One hurdle you have to overcome is the mental barrier, the one that makes you believe it will hurt if you fail. The other barrier is pain itself, what happens when you do fail.

So after conquering mind over matter and realizing that landing on grass hurts, he brings an old mattress along. Then he just practices throwing his body over. This quest begins at 2:37PM and hundreds of attempts later at 7:50PM (after five hours and 13 minutes of practice) he does it!

He’s only gone and learned how to do a backflip, landing bang on his feet.

He hasn’t attempted it since then though, as it seemed to take is out of him. But, what matters is he did it. Proving that when it comes to mastering how to do a backflip, you just need to breaking through that mental barrier of fearing you’ll hurt yourself. What also helped was his buddies, who cheered him on and provided the support he needed to keep at it.

“I was actually so sore during and after this that I haven’t been able to attempt it since (I think I counted over 400 attempts when editing this),” Kroehler told the Press Association. “I can tell you that my confidence in myself being able to do it has gone down a bit because I haven’t tried it and it was so hard mentally to overcome. I think if I practice some more I’ll get it back but I’m actually scared to go try it again. Whatever mentality you have going into something will determine the outcome of it. When I woke up that morning I told myself I’m not stopping until I get it and there were so many times I wanted to quit but didn’t. I also learned how powerful positive reinforcement from others can be. My friends were there encouraging me almost the entire time and even though they saw how much pain I was in and how down I was getting mentally they were the ones pushing to keep going even when I wanted to stop.”
