Everyone’s got their favorite horror movie whether it be a classic or modern one—and you’ve got plenty of movies to choose from because it’s a genre that dates right back to the beginning of the moving image itself.

No where is that more apparent than in this compilation video, A History of Horror by Diego Carrera, which chronicles horror movies from 1895 right up until 2016. For each year Carrera has picked one horror movie which he believes was the definitive one.

And it’s an intriguing journey through the ages detailing the changing tastes, monsters, ghouls, and gore that came to define horror and give people some scares year on year, decade after decade.

If you’re a horror movie buff you’ll recognise plenty of these films, maybe not so many from the late 19th/early 20th century, but still—if you do recognise those then you get extra nerd points.

It begins with 1895’s The Execution Of Mary, Queen Of Scots and features over a hundred movies ending on 2016’s The Witch. Along the way detailing some iconic and downright creepy shots.

It’s an interesting selection, whether you agree with all the choices or not that’s all part of the fun.

It’s also a fascinating glimpse into how horror is great at representing some of the collective tensions simmering away beneath the culture of the day.

Best not watching this alone in a dark room, in an empty house.
