You could probably use Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” over any footage and it would elevate it to new levels, but it’s used exceptionally well in the trailer for the third standalone Wolverine movie, Logan.

The trailer was recently released online and it looks like it’s going to deliver a different kind of superhero movie to the typical bombastic comic book movie release. Wolverine, going by his actual name of Logan, is older and bruised, burnt out—his healing abilities aren’t what they were and his ravaged body bears the scars of past battles.

The film’s also set in a world where most of the mutants have died and Professor Xavier is old, liver-spotted, forgetful and with diminished powers. Basically there isn’t much that’s super about these superheroes. But there is some hope, in the form of a young girl, known as X-23, who’s a clone of Wolverine and shares his abilities. She’s being hunted by Nathaniel Essex who wants to kill her.

The film’s emotional and melancholy tone might also come from the fact that it’s Hugh Jackman’s last film playing Wolverine, and if the film lives up to the trailer’s promise it looks like it will be a fitting and engaging end.

It’s also going to be R rated so there’s plenty of scope for brutal violence. As you’ll see in the international trailer above which features a bad guy getting clawed through the skull.

It’s even got that other R rated superhero movie character, Deadpool, psyched about it. Ryan Reynolds summed up most people’s reaction to seeing the trailer when he tweeted.

Here’s the official synopsis of the movie:

Set in the future of 2024, Logan and Professor Charles Xavier must cope with the loss of the X-Men when a corporation lead by Nathaniel Essex is destroying the world leaving it to destruction, with Logan’s healing abilities slowly fading away and Xavier’s Alzheimer’s forcing him to forget. Logan must defeat Nathaniel Essex with the help of a young girl named Laura Kinney, a female clone of Wolverine.

And here’s some tweets director James Mangold has been sending out relating to the film.
