As churches go, this giant high-heeled shoe covered in blue glass has got to be one of the more bizarre places of worship you might have seen. The church has been built at Ocean View Park in Budai, Taiwan. It’s 55ft tall and 36ft wide and is made with 320 panes of blue glass.

It’s not been built for regular worship but has instead been constructed for fairytale wedding ceremonies and pre-wedding photoshoots which can use it as a spectacular backdrop.

“In our planning, we want to make it a blissful, romantic avenue… Every girl imagines how they will look like when they become the bride.” Pan Tsuei-ping, the administration’s recreation section manager, told the BBC.

And lets face the facts, it’s an ingenious and cunning idea to attract more women into attending church.

The area where it stands, the Southwest Coast National Scenic Area, is a tourist hotspot so it’s also hoping to attract tourists, which it no doubt will. It might also attract a giant Cinderella looking for a lost glass slipper.

The BBC also details the inspiration behind the church:

The shoe was inspired by a local story. According to officials in the 1960s, a 24-year-old girl surnamed Wang from the impoverished region suffered from Blackfoot disease. Both of her legs had to be amputated, leading to the cancellation of her wedding. She remained unmarried and spent the rest of her life at a church.

The giant blue high-heeled church is an ode to her memory and if all the last minute building details go well is due to open by the 8 February, in time for the Chinese New Year.

Speaking as a woman i know it’s hard to say ‘no’ whenever a new pair of shoes is the subject of attention, but although this is a rather interesting concept i keep thinking that it is taking things a little bit too far.

Into the bad-taste zone.
