Taiwanese artist Yung Cheng Li, aka 3CM, uses striking, digitally manipulated images to explore various issues surrounding the female form. From society’s expectations to body modification to ideas of femininity, he creates photos that are both disturbing yet arresting.

So we get images revealing intrusive red string penetrating through a body or the stalk of a rose pierces a neck, or pins stick out of a woman’s back.

“The main appeal is to discuss the morality issue especially in women… the definition this society nowadays has given to women is quite narrow, judgmental, and unfree, and the media has great influence on it particularly,” Cheng Lin told The Creators Project. “When people don’t follow the latest fashion trends, they are considered as out-of-fashion or black sheet. This phenomenon is obvious to see among women. For instance, women need to shave hair or lose weight to keep good shape.”

By distorting poses used in fashion photography or playing with our expectations, the photos are a reflection of the demands society often imposes on women, the pruning and preening, to shape their bodies to perceived ideals of beauty.
