Oscars 2017 Fail: What Exactly Happened Plus The Best Reactions To That ‘Best Picture’ Mix Up
The Oscars 2017 will now be remembered for one major thing, and that was a huge FAIL due to a mix up with regards the Best Picture winner announcement. It was down to Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty to read the card and let the audience and those at home know who had won. The Oscar predictions had shown that it was likely to be a close call, especially between two films, La La Land and Moonlight.
So, tension was mounting for the Oscars 2017 Best Picture as Beatty read out the card, but then he looked a bit confused, so he then handed the card to Dunaway who announced the winner from the 2017 nominees as…La La Land—except that wasn’t actually who the Oscars 2017 Best Picture winner was. The winner was Moonlight and this was made clear about half way through the La La Land cast and crew’s winner’s speech.
This cringe-inducing Oscars 2017 error fell to La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz to correct. “This is not a joke, Moonlight has won Best Picture.” he said into the mic while Beatty stood by looking sheepish.
Oscars 2017 Fail: So What Happened?
Explaining what happened to The Hollywood Reporter Horowitz said, “Guys in headsets starting buzzing around. They took the envelope I had. It said Emma Stone in La La Land on it. It was clear there was something wrong. They started looking for the best picture envelope. Nobody knew where it was. Then it appeared. They opened it next to me and it said Moonlight, and so I grabbed it. I had to fix the situation.”
So who’s to blame for this already legendary Oscar 2017 mix up? Why did Warren Beatty have the envelope for Emma Stone’s Best Actress Oscar instead of the Best Picture envelope?
Well it seems that Beatty was handed the wrong envelope and the fault of that lies with PricewaterhouseCoopers, a “multinational professional services” based in London who have worked with the Academy Awards winners for many years.
Here’s what PricewaterhouseCoopers said in a statement about this Oscars 2017 debacle for the ages, which they sent to Mashable:
We sincerely apologize to “Moonlight,” “La La Land,” Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar® viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.
Whoops, you certainly wouldn’t want to be the person who handed that wrong envelope over. Still, if you’re wondering the reason how Beatty was handed the wrong one, and also why Emma Stone has stated (see tweet below) that she has her winner’s envelope so how could Warren Beatty also have one? Well, it’s because there are always two winners envelopes. Maybe after this Oscars 2017 nightmare, that might change for the Oscars 2018.

— Hollywood Reporter (@THR) February 27, 2017
“There are always two identical winners’ envelopes,” explain Mashable. “kept by PwC officials standing on opposite ends of the stage. Somehow, Beatty — presenting Best Picture with Dunaway — had been given the envelope for Best Actress, which had already been announced as La La Land’s Emma Stone moments before. On the other side of the stage, Beatty got handed an identical envelope. As anyone would, Beatty tried to roll with it. He looked over the card two times, then a third. He clearly wasn’t sure — it didn’t make sense that his envelope said ‘Emma Stone.’ And so he showed it to his fellow presenter, Dunaway, who saw the words La La Land. And, because the clock was ticking, she spoke them.”
The rest was Academy Awards’ history in the making. But, all things considered, yeah it was embarrassing for La La Land and, yeah, you made Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway look like idiots. And, yeah, you may never work in this town again, but it brought some great PR to the Oscars 2017. And this clip will be played and again and again and again down the years. Essentially it’s kind of made the Oscars 2017 more interesting than it probably would have been.
