The history of the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones and the turbulent events that shaped Westeros is long and complex. And for viewers of HBO’s fantasy show it can be even more difficult to understand, because the show isn’t nearly as detailed in it’s history as George R.R. Martin’s novels, ‘A Song of Fire and Ice.’

But, help is at hand because HBO released chapter 1 of their Game of Thrones ‘Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms’, which explores the beginnings and past of Westeros and the families, dynasties, and fallen monarchs who have led up to the current state of play in Westeros that began at season 1. Which started after the events of Robert’s Rebellion, the war that ended the Targaryen Dynasty.

Obviously with what’s happened at the end of Game of Thrones season 7 with Dany and Jon Snow means that the history of the Targaryens is at the forefront of everyone’s minds when it comes to the Seven Kingdom’s past.

Revealing The History Of The Seven Kingdoms

So, that’s what chapter one in the animated history deals with, in that it shows the fall of the ancient city of Valyria, its fiery destruction, and how House Targaryen and Dragonstone came to be from this society that counted dragons and magic as part of their culture.

The animated history of the Seven Kingdoms is an extension of the Histories & Lore animations, and done in the same style, which have accompanied the DVD and Blu-ray release of each season of the show. Like those they deal with the show’s dense histories and politics, and are narrated by the show’s cast. The Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms will cover a different aspect of Westeros’ past than the Histories and Lore, but will now be an additional accompaniment to the new Blu-ray and DVD releases featured as a 45-minute special, along with the Histories and Lore bonus feature.
