Rick Astley singing ‘Never Gonna Give You Up,’ aka RickRoll, is an internet meme favorite. As old as time, it’s basically when you think you’re about to watch something awesome, say the trailer for Rick and Morty season 3, and instead you get Astley’s seminal 1980s pop hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up.’ It never fails and it’s awesome.

You may have thought the meme’s time was over long ago, but not so it seems. Because at a recent show by the Foo Fighters at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan Dave Grohl used it to RickRoll an entire festival crowd. Not only that, but he even got the man himself, Mr Rick Astley, on stage to sing ‘Never Gonna Give You Up.’

Turns out the Foo Fighters hadn’t flown in Astley just for this purpose though (although that would have shown some next level dedication to the meme), but instead both of them were featured on the bill. So, they did the decent thing and teamed up to pretend to the audience that they were going to perform the Nirvana classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit’—which to be fair, the band did play but with Astley singing the lyrics to ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ over the top for a RickRolling mashup.

Rickrolling ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ Perfection

Foo Fighters And Rick Astley RickRoll never gonna give you up.

“Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome our new best friend, Rick Astley, right now.” Grohl says to the crowd. “This is f*cking crazy. I just met him two minutes ago. Come on you muthaf*ckers!”

At this point everybody is expecting the Fighters to start playing Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ but Grohl does a fantastic meta RickRoll. “I gotta remember how you do it, hold on.” Grohl says to the crowd. But then the band start playing the opening chords to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ As you would expect, the crowd goes mad.

Which is when the genius happens, because with everyone’s expectations now shifted back to thinking Astley’s going to sing Nirvana, he starts belting out the lyrics to ‘Never Gonna Give You Up,’ delivering a RickRoll for the ages. if ‘never gonna give you up’ was ever going to be a film it would be Inception. Totally crazy.

It all adds up to a very rock n’ roll version of ‘Neve Gonna Give You Up’ with Astley at one point screaming, when he gets to the lyric ‘I just want to tell you how I’m feeling’, “I’m feeling f*cking marvelous!”
