The internet was confounded on Sunday by Donald Trump touching a glowing orb. A photo surfaced from the president’s trip (his first state tour as POTUS) to Saudi Arabia of him, along with Egyptian president Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and Saudi king Salman bin Abdulaziz, all placing their hands on a glowing orb like some kind of Illuminati world domination ritual. Or Saruman using the Palantir of Orthanc orb to communicate with Sauron in LOTR.

The reality was far more dull, of course. The photo was taken when Trump visited the country’s new terrorism monitoring center, along with his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. They all took a tour of the recently opened Global Center for Combatting Extremist Ideology.

The center will be a HQ for combating extremist messaging and ideology, monitoring internet activity in real time while also promoting compassion and moderation. As part of the opening ceremony, according to the Saudi Gazette, “Trump and the King each placed their hands on a miniature globe that officially activated the center and launched a splashy welcome video.”

Twitter Gets It’s Hands On Trumps Glowing Orb

Well, that may be. But the internet wasn’t going to let a photo like that go to waste. So instead people took to Twitter to turn Trump and the, let’s be frank, sinister-looking glowing orb, into some very funny memes.

Which included references to the Illuminati, Sauron, Hydra from the Marvel universe, and many, many more. It all added up to another glorious addition in the ever-growing Trump memes that always seem to undermine the POTUS, whether he’s clutching a glowing orb or just trying to board a plane.
