It’s difficult to believe that not very long ago, in a pre-millennial society things were very, very different when it came to mainstream advertising, even up to the end of the 1980’s women were still subject to some disturbing sexist advertising that would cause a fanatical outburst if it ever appeared in today’s world.

It showcases a slightly disturbing viewpoint on how the world in general viewed and was comfortable with different social issues, going back further into the 50’s and 60’s and it’s easy to see that it was very much a ‘mans’ world’, where women lived in the kitchen, worked hard around the home to make their man happy, whilst always maintaining a permanent smile on their faces. Children too were portrayed in a slightly worrying fashion.

It’s amazing that you can also still see up to the 30’s and 40’s some lingering traces of commercial racism that had endured in advertising from before the turn of the century, and the socially acceptable use of babies and children to promote alcohol and cigarettes, can you imagine that happening today?

Going right back to the beginning of when advertising really started showcases just how far we have come in the last 100 or so years, it’s like the wild west, where anything goes for the purpose of getting Joe public to buy your merchandise. Amazing.

We’ve all come a long way since then and as the advertising campaigns below show society has radically changed. I wonder how it will all look in another 100 years?
